History of Trekor

Built on Copper.

Trekor is known for seeing opportunities where other mining companies don’t, and for delivering value for shareholders, employees and operating communities through hard work, perseverance and focused investment.

We call it going Beyond Potential. And over more than two decades of organic grown and project acquisition, the Company’s track record speaks for itself.

Incorporated in 1966, as Taseko Mines Limited, Trekor’s decades-long history of mineral exploration, project development and permitting, mine construction and operations has significantly expanded our mineral reserves, metal production and asset base over time.

Prosperity (later New Prosperity) in the Chilcotin region of south-central BC was the Company’s first mineral property. Trekor acquired 100% of the project in 1993 and, over the course of successive exploration programs, defined one of the most significant copper-gold porphyry deposits in Canada.

In 1999, Trekor acquired the idled Gibraltar copper-molybdenum mine in BC’s Cariboo region for just $1. Operations at Gibraltar had ceased in 1998 due to low copper prices and the mine was on ‘care and maintenance’ status. In 2004, copper prices began to recover and Trekor re-started Gibraltar. Shortly afterward, well-known mine operator Russell Hallbauer joined the organization as President & CEO.

With Mr. Hallbauer at the helm, the Company grew over the following decade from a workforce of 10 to more than 700, while implementing a three-phase, $800 million expansion and modernization program at Gibraltar.

Later, Trekor acquired the Aley Niobium project in northeast BC (2007), the Florence Copper project in Arizona (2014), and the Yellowhead Copper project in central BC (2019) – efficiently building its resource base and future development pipeline.

Building on its operational strengths and high-quality development pipeline, current President & CEO Stuart McDonald and a diverse team of experienced mining leaders advanced the Florence Copper project through permitting and construction. In 2026, Florence Copper began commercial operations, becoming the first new major copper producer in the United States in more than a decade and the world’s first greenfield in-situ copper recovery facility.

In addition, in 2025, the Trekor team, the Tŝilhqot’in Nation, and Province of British Columbia reached a historic agreement to resolve a long-standing dispute over the New Prosperity property, creating a path forward that recognizes both Indigenous rights and the value of one of Canada's most significant, undeveloped copper-gold resources.

Today, Trekor is one of the fastest-growing copper producers in Canada and a recognized leader in North American copper development and production.
